HYDROMET Bulletin # 1

Tuesday 5th August 2008   Time: 7:00am  local time

Rainfall and River stage associated with unstable upper level conditions and a tropical wave.

Infrared satellite imagery and observations indicate heavy showers and thunderstorms developed in the south and spread over the remainder of the country during the night. The first visible imagery this morning was showing deep convection persisting over the Stann Creek and Corozal districts while reports from the west indicate heavy rainfall persisting over the Cayo and Western Belize district. Reports from Becol indicate .54ins of rainfall was recorded last night and Water levels at Chalillo was 400.88 meters while at Mollejon the level was 265.92 meters with both spilling. The Macal river continues to rise and with additional rainfall the low lying wooden bridge at San Ignatio could possibly become flooded. A tropical wave crossing the country coupled with very unstable upper level conditions will maintain showery weather conditions during today and tonight with a gradual but only temporary improvement expected during Wednesday and Thursday. Another tropical wave is forecast to affect the country into the weekend.
